The iPAD (actually most tablets) have LCD displays with LEDs in them to provide the backlight that allow reading in dark/dim environments. There are three types of LCDs; TN(common, cheap, fast response, limited angles and colors, IPS(expensive, slower response, wider angles, better colors), MVA(most expensive, fast response, wide angles, better colors, poor brightness). Both the Fire and iPAD have IPS-LCD displays.

With an IPS display you can practically lay the screen flat on a table look at it from the edge and still see the screen clearly.

IPS screens have a 178 degree viewing angle.

There are IPS LCD's and IPS LED backlit LCD's - both have great viewing angles...however the LED backlit display tends to have better color.

Not knocking the Kindle, seems like a good product. But there's a reason the iPad is $499 and the Kindle Fire is $199. The screen is just part of it.

The IPS screen used on the iPad cost Apple around $95 to purchase. You can get one on Amazon (pun intended) for around $119 I'm pretty sure the Kindle isn't packing the same quality screen.

I'm no screen specialist...this is just my best educated opinion.
